Covid-19 Causes Brain Damage

Covid-19 Causes Brain Damage: Not only does Covid-19 damage the lungs, heart, and kidneys, but it can also cause serious brain damage.
Scientists have warned of the potential danger of coronavirus-related brain damage that can lead to serious emotional problems, including inflammation, psychosis, and delirium.

Pierre-Marie Lledo, director of the Department of Neuroscience at the Institut Pasteur said, “We had to wait for the virus to come over to Europe from China before scientists in Italy could tell us about its neurological effects,”.

A study by researchers described 43 cases of COVID-19 patients who experienced temporary brain dysfunction, strokes, nerve damage, or other traumatic brain effects.
This study adds to the latest studies that also find that the disease can damage the brain. Scientists anticipate a pandemic with a high rate of brain damage linked to an epidemic similar to the outbreak of typhoid fever encephalitis in the 1920s and 1930s after a flu outbreak in 1918.

COVID-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus, is primarily a respiratory disease that affects the lungs, but neurologists and medical professionals say that the emerging evidence of its effect on the brain is related. During the study, patients with brain damage were diagnosed with a rare condition called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) that is commonly seen in children and can be caused by viral infections.

Since the disease has only been present for a few months, it may not be possible to determine the long-term effects of COVID-19. Physicians need to be aware of the possible emotional effects, for early detection can improve a patient’s outcome.

Emerging evidence underscores the need for a larger, more comprehensive study and global data collection to assess the prevalence of such emotional and psychological problems.

Nicholas Locker, a professor of virology at the University of Surrey. said, “We know that the receptor which allows Covid-19 to enter cells is present in the respiratory tract, but it is also present in cells of other organs, such as the brain and liver, It’s quite common for a virus to be able to migrate, so it’s not surprising that Covid-19 causes brain damage,” .
