Maharashtra Extends Diwali Vacation for Students to 14 Days– Maharashtra Education minister, Varsha Gaikhwad anounces to extend diwali vacation for school’s. Earliar only 1 week holiday was given to the students during diwali. However this year holidays are for 14 days i.e. from 7th November till 20th of November.

Schools were shifted to the online mode in March this year due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
Gaikwad said Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is taking views of state advocate general and other authorities concerned regarding reopening of standard 11 classes.

However this year teachers demanded for a 21 days Diwali vacation due to extra work load. While listening to the anouncement of Maharashtra university for 5 days holiday, teachers granted for 21 days holiday. Hence the government has asked schools not to conduct online lectures during this Diwali vacation time. Government had previously justified the lack of leaves by saying that the faculty had to complete the pending syllabus for the academic year. Rules say that it is compulsory for teachers to have 230 workdays.

University examinations have also been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with some exams being postponed or canceled altogether. Further, officials also ran into technical troubles at examination centres like the software for conducting examinations reportedly malfunctioned.

“As per the Secondary School Code, the number of holidays in schools every year cannot be more than 76 days. Similarly, teaching days have been set at 200 days for Class 1 to 5 and 220 days for Class 6 to 8,” the notification said.

Similarly, Rajesh Pandya from the Teachers Democratic Front said, “Irrespective of the pandemic, the academic year started around the right time (June 15) at most schools. Hence, reducing the Diwali vacation is unfair.”
