Ganpati Bappa- A god revered by millions around the world. The remover of obstacles. The patron of art and science. The God of wisdom. The son of Shiva and Parvati. It is his birth- Ganesh Ji. Hindu’s celebrate with great fervor and devotion every year. Yes, it is time for the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. In honour of this massive festival in India, we’ve put together a piece on how India celebrates Ganpati Visarjan!
Devotees do the visarjan on the day they conclude their puja. Some perform the puja for one-and-a-half days, three days, five days, seven days or eleven days, depending on their family tradition. Read on to know how to perform Ganesh visarjan.
On the day of Visarjan, the entire family must gather to chant the holy mantras and perform a few rituals. It includes the offering of the Dhoop, Deep, Pushpa, Gandha and Naivedya. Offer Bappa’s favourite Modaks and Laddos.
Then perform aarti before Bappa begins his return journey. Thank Bappa for visiting your home and also seek forgiveness for any mistake that you may have committed.
Then slightly and gently move Bappa, to mark the beginning of his returning journey. Distribute Prasad to everyone at home. The family members must then put Akshat on Lord Ganesha and urge him to return as soon as possible.
Then one must offer curd and sugar to Bappa for his blissful journey. Some coconut, sugar or jaggery and some food grains must be tied to a red cloth and handed over to Bappa so that it comes in handy as he returns to his heavenly abode.
The family members must then do the pradakshina of Bappa and take his blessings. Then, the elder member of the family, who would carry the idol must gently lift Bappa with his face facing the house, and take him around for one final tour of the home before the Visarjan.
Amid loud chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya Pudhcha Varshi Laukar Yaa, as Bappa steps out, one of the family members must break coconut as a gesture of auspiciousness.
After reaching the Visarjan spot, one must perform the aarti once again, and then gently immerse him in the water.
One member of the family must remain at home and keep the doors of the house open until the Visarjan is over.
Visarjan Vidhi can be performed inside the house in a bucket or a tub or authorized places.
