The Importance of Coding: 5 reasons!

The word coding seems to be heard with increasing regularity in today’s workplace, and for many, it leads to two obvious questions: what is computer coding, and what is code? Coding, or scripting, is the language used to provide a set of instructions for an environment such as a PC, robot, or browser, to perform specific tasks.

These terms are generally used interchangeably, though some people apply varying distinctions between them. Coding involves inputting step-by-step commands for a computer to follow. The very nature of computers is that they behave in ways that they are directly instructed to, based on these instructions.

Learning code is, in a broad sense, like learning any language – or to be more accurate, a family of languages. Coding has become the framework for the modern world and coders act as architects of these constructs. Their skills are used in creating mobile phone and desktop apps, and popular websites such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. There are many different programming languages, each with a different purpose.

Here are 5 reasons why coding is important for young minds

1) Coding is another language.

Language teaches children how to communicate and teaches logical thinking. Language also strengthens both verbal and and written skills. Coding has a language all its own.  Every letter in the Alphabet has a special formula of 0’s and 1’s that represent it. These 0’s and 1’s give the technology around us directions on how to perform.  What better way for our children to understand why and how the technology around them operates than by learning to code and speaking to the technology around them.

2) Software is Eating the World

“Software is Eating the World” was a quote by famous investor Marc Andreeson (invested in Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, Groupon, Skype, etc.). He said this in 2011, at the cusp of the internet revolution across the world, where he argued that as more people came online and the cost of running a start-up kept going down there would be an explosion of startups disrupting every industry we know.

Today, in India, if you want to pay your mobile bill you can do it through Paytm. If you want to book a hotel, you can do it through MakeMyTrip or Oyo. If you want to get a taxi to work, you can book an Ola or Uber. Even the Kirana stores we know and love, are coming online through JioMart. Software is in every industry, changing business models at a pace that has never been witnessed in human history. So to get handy with the growing techno-savvy world that runs on automation and software technology, it is important to learn to code.

3) Job Security

With the pace of changing business models, being able to speak the language of technology is becoming increasingly important. We are seeing a massive churn at the executive levels of most traditional companies, as people less-versed in this Internet age we live in, are being replaced by more technologically fluent professionals.  This can be seen even now, with people who work in the technology space being able to continue working despite being at home. Coding can be used and implemented in each and every model to make it even better. Coding can be used in every field of life. So, in order to enhance your business, this skill will always be a plus point indeed.

4. High Earning Potential

According to Pay-scale, the average income of a programmer in India is over ₹4 lakh! Furthermore, according to the US College Board, “Computer programming jobs are growing at 2x the national average.” There is an over 500 billion dollar opportunity with coding, and with two-third of coding jobs coming from outside the tech sector, being able to code in the 21st century, opens a person to opportunities that would otherwise have been impossible to obtain. So, along with your skills, coding will definitely give a spike boost to your financial career as it definitely has some high earning potentials.

5) Unique Problem-Solving Skills

As they learn to code and give direction they learn that there is no one way to do something and that even if their way didn’t work.  They can improve upon what they have already done without worrying about failing. Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it is important for kids to understand and be able to work with and understand the technology around them.

Having children learn coding at a young age prepares them for the future.  Coding helps children with communication, creativity, math, writing, and confidence.

“Learning to code has the inadvertent effect of teaching you how to think”. Coding allows children to develop their logical thinking skills. From young age children, exposed to coding, are trained to think about problems at an abstract/conceptual level and take a modular approach to problem-solving.

This is a powerful skill to have, as they are equipped with the right mental frameworks to deal with the increasingly challenging problems posed to them in today’s world.
