Why is Hop Shoots so expensive?
Apparently, these effective properties have given a boost to the price of this vegetable. The vegetable is expensive because of the high cultivation and harvesting costs. Additionally, the harvesting is difficult as it has to be done by hand and it takes three years for it to come to fruition. The hop shoots are ”absolutely back-breaking to harvest” and hence the vegetable is expensive.
This vegetable costs around Rs 85,000 per kg in the international markets. According to a report, it used to sell for 1000 pounds per kilo in international markets even six years ago, which is roughly Rs. 1 lakh today. This crop is rarely seen in Indian markets and can only be purchased by placing a specific order. As a matter of fact, Amresh Singh, an enterprising farmer from Bihar, is growing the world’s most expensive vegetable hop shoots, the first one in India.
How did Amresh Singh grow Hop Shoots?
Amresh Singh is a 38-year-old farmer from Bihar’s Karamdih village of Aurangabad. Amresh Singh, an intermediate-pass from Hazaribagh’s St. Columbus College, is the first person to start hop shoots cultivation. He began growing this vegetable in his 5 kathas of land without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Moreover, he spent Rs. 2.5 lakhs in his attempt to harvest this unique vegetable. Likewise, he brought the saplings from Varanasi’s Indian Vegetable Research Institute two months ago and cultivated them.

In an interview, Amresh said, “I am happy to say that more than 60 percent of its cultivation has happened successfully. I have planted the saplings of this vegetable two months ago after having brought it from the Indian Vegetable Research Institute at Varanasi. I hope it will be a grand success and turnaround agriculture in Bihar too.”

In the farming sector, taking a risk with self-confidence ultimately helps the farmer to win. I have taken the risk for experimenting with the cultivation of hop-shoot in Bihar. I hope it will set a benchmark.”
“If PM Modi makes a special arrangement for the promotion of cultivation of ‘hop-shoots’, it will make the farmers earn 10 times more than they can do by other means of agriculture within a couple of years.”, he added.
